The Luxembourg Water Management Agency has launched a public consultation on key issues tied to the country’s next water management plan, which will cover rivers, streams and groundwater under the EU Water Framework Directive. The consultation — officially open until mid-July 2026 — invites feedback from citizens, stakeholders and environmental groups.
This initiative is part of the fourth cycle of planning for water management in Luxembourg, focusing on maintaining and improving water quality, protecting ecosystems, and ensuring sustainable use of freshwater resources. The consultation document outlines main challenges and proposed priorities ahead of the draft plan.
Under EU requirements, all member states must aim to achieve “good ecological status” of water bodies by 2027. Luxembourg’s water authorities recognize that, despite progress, substantial work remains to meet these objectives at both national and European levels.
Participants can submit opinions and suggestions online or in writing, giving the public a direct voice in shaping environmental policy. Officials say public engagement is essential to creating a plan that balances ecological protection, economic needs and community interests.
By encouraging broad involvement, Luxembourg aims to foster shared responsibility in safeguarding a resource critical to health, nature and future development.
