People Are Turning Back to Handmade Hobbies as AI Wearies Many

A new report shows that searches for “analog hobbies” — such as crafting, knitting, painting and other hands-on activities — have jumped significantly over the past several months, highlighting a rising desire to unplug from screens and fast-paced technology.

Retailers in the arts and crafts sector have noticed this change firsthand. One major craft supply company with over a thousand stores in North America reported that its site searches for traditional, non-digital hobbies have soared, suggesting hobbyists are rediscovering the joy of making things with their hands. 

Experts say this trend is not simply nostalgia but a response to mental fatigue caused by nonstop social media, 24/7 news cycles, and AI tools that can overwhelm users with information and automation. Many people find intentional, slow activities help them recharge and support well-being. 

Therapists and wellness advocates note that crafting and similar analog pursuits can reduce stress and foster creativity, making them appealing alternatives or complements to tech use. This movement may reflect deeper societal questions about how to balance digital advances with human needs.

As technology continues to evolve, interest in low-tech, mindful activities could grow further — helping people stay grounded even as AI expands into everyday life.
