Luxembourg is currently under a red weather alert as Meteorological Service MeteoLux warns of heavy rainfall striking the region between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
Although authorities initially issued an orange warning, the alarm was upgraded to red as intense downpours began around 7:30 p.m., quickly overwhelming drainage systems at the Schueberfouer fairgrounds and flooding areas like Eecher Plaz and Rollingergrund. By 8:30 p.m., rising waters prompted the police to close Place François-Joseph Dargent in Eich, while Rue de Bridel was also blocked after mud washed onto the road.
The Weather and Flood Risk Assessment Unit (CERI) met twice Monday, forecasting up to 50 mm of rain per square meter, with some areas possibly absorbing as much as 80–100 mm. The risk of flooding along the Alzette River and other small southern and eastern waterways is expected to increase overnight.
Local authorities, particularly in municipalities like Mersch, issued warnings that the Alzette could overflow rapidly. Emergency services, including the Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) and police, have bolstered patrols to safeguard key infrastructure.
Rainfall is expected to taper off by Tuesday morning. In the meantime, residents—especially those near rivers or in lower-lying areas—are urged to monitor updates from MeteoLux and stay alert.
