Luxembourg Sharpens Research Focus with New National Priorities for 2026

Luxembourg has updated its National Research Priorities for 2026 to guide government funding and help align public research with national goals in technology, society and the economy. The new priorities build on the country’s 2030 vision for a knowledge-based society and encourage research that addresses key challenges and opportunities for Luxembourg’s future. 

Artificial intelligence remains central to many research themes, with emphasis on trustworthy AI development, advanced data analysis, and applications that benefit sectors like healthcare, mobility and finance. The updated framework encourages interdisciplinary research that connects AI with other technologies to create broader impact. 

Strengthening innovation in health and biomedicine is another priority, where data-driven methods and digital tools are expected to advance personalised care and improve outcomes. Education and skills development are also highlighted, with funding supporting research that enhances learning and workforce readiness for future industries. 

To support these priorities, the Luxembourg government and the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) have signed a multi-year funding agreement worth €362 million, reinforcing long-term support for high-quality research and collaboration with industry and society. 

By focusing public research on areas linked to economic growth, social impact and digital transition, Luxembourg aims to strengthen its research ecosystem and ensure that science serves broad national needs.
