Luxembourg Plans 11 New High Schools by 2050
LuxembourgPosted 4 days ago by Team · 2 min readLuxembourg has unveiled an ambitious long-term plan to expand its secondary education system, with the construction of 11 new high schools by 2050. The announcement was made by Education Minister Claude Meisch along with Mobility and Public Works Minister Yuriko Backes, highlighting the government’s strong focus on preparing for future educational needs.
The initiative comes in response to continuous population growth and the rising number of students across the country. Authorities aim to ensure that every student has access to quality education close to home, reducing long travel times and improving overall accessibility. The new schools will be strategically distributed across different regions to maintain balanced development nationwide.
In addition to long-term planning, the government has introduced an acceleration plan to address immediate capacity challenges. This includes 17 infrastructure projects, such as new constructions, extensions, and temporary modular classrooms, designed to quickly create more space for students. These efforts will help accommodate the increasing demand while permanent solutions are being developed.
The overall investment in school infrastructure is significant, with billions of euros expected to be allocated over time. The plan also focuses on aligning school locations with public transport networks, promoting more sustainable mobility options and better urban planning. Environmental assessments and site selection processes are already underway, with the full sector plan expected to be finalized by 2028.
This forward-looking strategy reflects Luxembourg’s commitment to strengthening its education system, ensuring equal opportunities for students, and preparing the country for future demographic and societal changes.
