Luxembourg is preparing to officially recognize the state of Palestine, Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel confirmed during a parliamentary commission meeting on Monday.
According to local media, the final decision could be announced later this month at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Luxembourg is expected to coordinate its move with other European partners, including France and Belgium, signaling a broader regional shift in policy.
The decision comes after months of hesitation from Luxembourg’s government, despite growing pressure within Europe to push for an end to Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. The conflict began after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which triggered a military campaign that has since left more than 60,000 Palestinians dead, according to local health authorities.
European leaders have become increasingly outspoken. Earlier this month, European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera described Israel’s military actions as “genocide,” while Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU would toughen its stance. Measures include pausing financial payments to Israel and sanctioning what she termed “extremist ministers” and violent settlers.
At the United Nations, momentum is also building. Just last Friday, the General Assembly endorsed a declaration demanding “tangible, timebound, and irreversible steps” toward a two-state solution before its September 22 session. Luxembourg’s forthcoming recognition of Palestine would align with this push and reinforce international calls for a political resolution to the crisis.
