Despite being a universal experience for nearly half the world’s population, menstruation remains a topic often surrounded by silence, stigma, and discomfort. The Luxembourg City Museum aims to change that narrative with its bold new exhibition, Et leeft, dedicated to exploring the history and evolving discourse around menstruation.
The exhibition — whose title Et leeft playfully translates to “it flows” — offers a journey through time, showcasing menstrual products from the late 19th century to today. Through museum artifacts, interviews, music, film, and art, it captures how society’s perception of menstruation has transformed — from superstition and secrecy to open dialogue about equality, rights, and dignity.
In recent years, Luxembourg has made strides toward menstrual equity, with initiatives such as the 2021 petition advocating for menstrual leave and the introduction of free sanitary products in public restrooms.
By blending culture, history, and activism, the Luxembourg City Museum’s exhibition not only educates and challenges taboos but also celebrates the progress made toward a more inclusive and open conversation about menstruation.
The exhibition “Et leeft” runs at the Luxembourg City Museum until July 2026.
