European Commission Launches Public Consultation on Airport Regulations

LuxembourgPosted on 07 August 2025 by Team

The European Commission is inviting citizens, experts, and industry stakeholders to contribute feedback on three critical pieces of airport legislation: the Slot Regulation, Groundhandling Directive, and Airport Charges Directive. The aim is to evaluate whether these rules—covering access, pricing, slot allocation, and baggage services—are still effective in today’s evolving aviation environment.

Recognizing shifts such as market consolidation, capacity constraints, labour shortages, heightened competition from non-EU carriers, and growing decarbonisation priorities, the Commission hopes to uncover ways to simplify procedures, reduce red tape, and enhance fairness for airlines and passengers alike.

Sustainable Transport and Tourism Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasised aviation’s importance for mobility, job creation, and regional connectivity. He urged wide participation, underscoring a vision of a resilient and competitive aviation industry that delivers affordable and reliable service across EU regions.
