As Luxembourg prepares for the accession of its new Grand Duke, another symbol of national life is also set to change: the country’s coins. On Friday morning, the Banque centrale du Luxembourg (BCL) presented the brand-new designs, which will enter circulation in 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Luxembourg’s numismatic tradition.
The coins will feature the profile of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, who officially becomes Grand Duke of Luxembourg in just one week. In the designs, Guillaume is depicted in profile, with a subtle smile—a visual choice that aims to capture both dignity and approachability.
During the unveiling, Gaston Reinesch, President of the BCL, highlighted the symbolic importance of the moment:
"Through their graphics, these coins are part of the country's rich numismatic tradition while paying tribute to the Sovereign, Head of State and symbol of national unity and independence. By contributing to the development of these coins, the BCL is honoured to participate in this major event for the Grand Duchy and its monetary history."
The series will include the full range of euro coins, from 1, 2 and 5 cent pieces up to the 1 and 2 euro coins. Each carries the same portrait of Guillaume, framed with the word “Luxembourg” and the year of issue. The larger denominations, such as the 1 and 2 euro coins, feature greater detail, ensuring the design remains clear and recognisable even with daily use.
For collectors and history enthusiasts, the unveiling also underscores the continuity of tradition. Each new reign in Luxembourg brings with it an updated set of coins, which serve both as practical currency and as enduring historical markers of the times. Many Luxembourgers still hold on to coins from the reign of Grand Duke Jean or early issues featuring Grand Duke Henri. The new series will therefore not only be a tool of daily commerce but also a cherished keepsake of the transition to Guillaume’s reign.
Beyond symbolism, the release of these coins represents an important technical and artistic achievement. Coinage design requires a delicate balance: the portrait must reflect the personality of the Grand Duke while also meeting European Central Bank (ECB) standards for euro circulation. The BCL worked closely with artists and engravers to achieve this result.
As the countdown to Guillaume’s enthronement continues, the coins offer Luxembourgers a tangible glimpse of the new era ahead. While they will only officially appear in wallets and cash registers in early 2026, Friday’s presentation already gave citizens a first look at the new face of their currency—literally and symbolically.
