The long-awaited Ettelbruck underpass has reached a major milestone, with half of the 300-metre tunnel now completed. Waterproofing and structural works are currently underway, marking steady progress in a project that has been years in the making.
The €38 million tunnel is at the heart of a broader €84 million redevelopment of Ettelbruck’s railway station and surrounding district. The plan includes the construction of the new Patton Bridge, upgrades to Rue Prince Henri and Avenue Salentiny, as well as a complete redesign of Rue JF Kennedy. Authorities expect the finishing works and technical installations to extend into 2027–2028.
Progress on the underpass, however, is also tied to the relocation of a petrol station at the entrance to Ettelbruck. A new facility is being built near the Patton Bridge in Erpeldange. Once it opens, the old station will be demolished to allow construction of the eastern entrance and exit of the tunnel.
Behind the new station, officials also plan to develop a dedicated parking area for around 30 buses, equipped with sanitary facilities for drivers. Costing approximately €1 million, the bus depot is designed to resolve long-standing issues caused by buses parking in the town centre during breaks. Work could begin as early as next autumn, subject to permit approvals. Once completed, Rue du Viaduc will fully reopen between Laduno and the roundabout.
Redevelopment of Ettelbruck station, Luxembourg’s second largest, has been ongoing since 2017. The underpass represents one of its most significant components, aimed at improving traffic flow, safety, and accessibility in the busy transport hub.
