The youth organisation of the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR), known as Adrenalin, has voiced strong opposition to the government’s planned French literacy programme, the ALPHA project. The group argues that the initiative threatens Luxembourg’s cultural identity rather than strengthening integration.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Adrenalin criticised the project as a step toward the “dissolution of the Luxembourgish language, culture, and tradition.” According to the young politicians, prioritising French literacy in this way risks deepening divisions in society rather than fostering cohesion.
Education Minister Claude Meisch, who is overseeing the programme, is now facing calls from Adrenalin to abandon the project altogether. The group insists that policies should instead focus on reinforcing the national language and traditions, which they see as essential pillars of Luxembourg’s identity.
The criticism highlights the ongoing debate in Luxembourg about the role of languages in education and integration. While supporters of literacy initiatives argue they help newcomers participate more fully in society, opponents such as Adrenalin warn that placing too much emphasis on French could undermine the unique multilingual character of the country.
