Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of reciprocal tariffs, calling them damaging to the global economy. The EU faces a 20% tariff on its goods as part of Trump's broader trade policy. Von der Leyen emphasized the EU's readiness to retaliate with countermeasures worth billions while urging negotiation to avoid a trade war. She warned these tariffs would harm consumers, disrupt supply chains, and increase inflation globally. 

The EU plans to use its economic strength to protect its interests, with countermeasures potentially extending beyond goods to services. Von der Leyen also highlighted the negative impact of tariffs on U.S. businesses and consumers, arguing they undermine Trump's goal of reindustrializing America. Despite preparing for retaliation, she stressed the importance of finding a negotiated solution to prevent further economic disruption.
