The remnants of Hurricane Kirk are set to impact northwest France on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Luxembourg is also preparing for significant rainfall, with MeteoLux issuing a yellow alert, forecasting two weeks' worth of rain within 24 hours.
Rainfall is expected to range from 30 to 50 liters per square meter, with some areas potentially seeing up to 60 liters, according to MeteoLux. Although Hurricane Kirk reached Category 4 over the Atlantic, it has weakened as it approaches Europe. Nevertheless, it is expected to deliver intense rain and wind gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour (81 mph) to France’s coastal regions, as per La Chaine Meteo. Sea swells could reach 10 meters (33 feet) in certain areas.
The UK Met Office, while initially monitoring potential warnings for the UK, now predicts that northern France will face the strongest impacts of the storm, with reduced risks to the UK.
So far, 13 storms have formed in the Atlantic during this hurricane season, with four hurricanes making landfall in the US. Meanwhile, in France, storm warnings are already in place due to another low-pressure system arriving from the Atlantic, raising flood risks in the south. The ongoing rains are likely to disrupt corn harvesting and wheat planting in France, already delayed by recent weather conditions, and add to the agricultural challenges caused by extreme weather this season. Last month was the wettest September France has seen in 25 years, according to Météo-France.
