A groundbreaking study is underway to explore how robot-assisted learning can help autistic children develop key skills at home. The project brings together LuxAI, the University of Birmingham, and the Luxembourg Institute of Health.
At the centre of the study is QTrobot, a friendly humanoid robot designed to teach social communication, emotional skills, and behavioural routines in a calm, repeatable way. Families in the West Midlands will use the robot with their children aged 2.5 to 4.5 years.
Researchers aim to understand whether robot-delivered sessions can complement traditional therapy, especially for families facing long waiting times for support. Early intervention is known to be crucial, and technology could help close the accessibility gap.
The project will span several years, monitoring progress closely and gathering data from home-based interactions. Parents will also share their experiences to help evaluate usability and comfort.
If successful, this study could shape the future of personalised therapeutic tools, potentially making early autism support more scalable across Europe.
