Digitalisation is having a real impact on people's lives. Skills are not always practical to be updated, and less practical to compete with computers and automation on certain matters. In this context, a guaranteed basic income is being discussed as a long-term solution for the sure-to-come challenge for the organisation of work and people in today's society.
What's basic income?
Giving people a guaranteed income instead of today's affirmative actions such as guaranteed jobs. For jobs you still need to work for income whereas a guaranteed income does not require working.
There are experiments happening in this space.
What are the challenges?
How to finance the income for everyone scheme? It cannot come from the Federal Budget.
Why would anyone work if there is a guaranteed income? Particularly work where we still need people and not machines.
How will our society change? Can there be a wealth-tax or income-tax when other people get income for free?
Does that mean we are stuck with whatever wealth we have and we would not be able to create additional wealth at all?
