Luxembourg is preparing for a change in military leadership as Chief of Staff General Steve Thull is set to retire on October 1, 2026, after 39 years of service, including six at the head of the Army.

In anticipation of his departure, the Minister of Defence, Yuriko Backes, has launched the application and selection process for his successor, the Directorate of Defence announced. The future Chief of Staff will be responsible for continuing the transformation and modernization of the Armed Forces in line with technological, societal, and global developments in a complex international environment.

The Chief of Staff leads the Luxembourg Army, advises the Minister of Defence on military matters, and ensures the implementation of government directives. The role also involves overseeing organization, equipment, training, and representing Luxembourg in NATO and European Union military committees.

Under the law of 7 August 2023, the new Chief of Staff must be chosen from among career officers holding at least the rank of lieutenant colonel. The appointment will be made by the Grand Duke on the Government’s proposal.
