Luxembourg-based OCSiAl has announced a major $300 million (≈€280 million) investment to build a graphene nanotube factory in Differdange, set to open in phases between 2028 and 2030. The facility will serve as a “development center for the next generation of engineers and scientists” and is expected to create more than 300 jobs by 2030.
According to OCSiAl, the Differdange site will become the world’s largest production unit for graphene nanotubes, a breakthrough material that enhances battery performance, tire durability, and electronic safety. The company formalized a long-term lease with the Luxembourg State for a 3.63-hectare site, backed by funding from national investors.
Economy Minister Lex Delles called the project “a perfect illustration of Luxembourg’s ambition to be a leader in industrial innovation,” noting that it reflects investor confidence and will generate high-skilled employment. Finance Minister Gilles Roth added that it reinforces Luxembourg’s role as “a platform for long-term innovation and smart industrial development.”
Founded in Luxembourg in 2010, OCSiAl is already the world’s largest producer of graphene nanotubes. The material is currently used in over 10% of smartphones and one million electric vehicles worldwide, with current production based in Serbia, where capacity is being expanded fourfold.
Board members Alain Kinsch and Norbert Becker hailed the Differdange plant as a “historic milestone” for both the company and the region, positioning Europe at the forefront of advanced materials innovation.
