The Luxembourg government has launched a harsh public rebuke of the German government and European Commission for resuming border-checks — arguing the move undermines the spirit of the Schengen Agreement and disrupts daily life.
According to Luxembourg’s Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden, the renewed German border controls between the two countries are hurting roughly 52,000 daily commuters and triggering complaints from businesses about delays and operational snags.
Gloden also criticised the Commission for failing to enforce Schengen rules — saying checks are now unjustified because irregular migration to Germany has dropped sharply.
In response, the European Commission defended its commitment to internal-border-free travel and said it has launched a consultation process to address Luxembourg’s concerns.
