Leudelange Residents Reject 30 km/h Speed Limit in Local Referendum

LuxembourgPosted on 13 October 2025 by Team

Residents of Leudelange have decided to maintain the current 50 km/h speed limit after voting in a local referendum on Sunday. Of roughly 1,000 registered voters, 552 citizens — about 54% — voted against reducing the limit to 30 km/h, while 456 (45.24%) supported the change. Voter turnout stood at around 63%, a figure that Mayor Lou Linster described as “somewhat disappointing.”

In a statement following the vote, the mayor and the college of aldermen said they “fully respect this democratic choice,” noting that the proposed Zone 30 plan had aimed to improve both road safety and quality of life. Linster added that the close result demonstrated the value of consulting citizens directly and encouraged more referendums in Luxembourg’s local governance.

The municipality now plans to explore alternative ways to calm traffic without changing the official speed limit, particularly along the route between Schlewenhof and Leudelange station.
